I am sooo tired of hearing people diss orcas. Nearly every time I tell someone that the orca is my favorite animal, the first words out of their mouth are usually "Didn't you hear about the orca that killed that trainer at SeaWorld?"

News flash, people: an average of THIRTY people die every year in the US alone as the result of a DOG attack. That's TEN times more than ALL known fatalities caused by orcas in the entire world! Think about THAT before you open your mouth.

You don't hear ME telling YOU how potentially dangerous your beloved companion Rover is, or criticizing anything else you're fond of, because that's just plain rude. Seriously, are you deliberately trying to make me stop loving orcas? Because that's what it sounds like. By that same logic I should stop being friends with anyone who's ever committed a sin.

Humans have been mauled and killed by lions, tigers, sharks, alligators, snakes, bears, hippos, elephants, etc. but I never hear anyone point that out when someone lists one of them as their favorite animal. So there have been some fatalities associated with orcas. BFD. Why don't we all go back to hating Germany for the Nazis, or Japan for Pearl Harbor?

That little remark about the death at SeaWorld may seem harmless to you, but to me it is completely uncalled for. THINK before you speak, people. Please. I get the same grief concerning pet rats. People dare to compare them unfavorably to wild rats, and even wild rats aren't bad. They're just trying to survive. Sharks are worse. They'll take a bite out of you and spit it out, if they don't eat you whole. But they're God's creatures too.

I love orcas, and I love rats, and there is NOTHING you can say or do to change my mind! ^__^

Considering that orcas are predators and they're way bigger than humans, I'd say that they're showing remarkable restraint in their dealings with humanity.

Also, rats are awesome!

Yes! They are one of the top predators in the ocean, yet they NEVER try to eat humans. I think that's pretty amazing right there. Just like wolves. It is extremely rare for wolves to attack humans, and it is very fitting that orcas are known as "the wolves of the sea." :D

I've always had a soft spot in my heart for sea mammals, especially orcas! I don't know, maybe people freak out about the (very rare) attacks of orcas rather than getting worked up about dogs because dogs are more familiar animals?

(then again, that wouldn't explain why certain breeds, like pit bulls, get a bad rap, when most of them are sweet hounds)

Wolves are another of my favorite animals, but apparently wolf lovers are common as air molecules on dA. :P

Wolves are pretty awesome, but I'm the type of person who can love any type of animal if I just stop and admire them. Even snails and octopi. They're pretty neat if you take the time to observe them. :D

I'm interested in just about every sort of animal. (except worms for some reason, blurgh) I just happen to have a few special favorites.

Octopi are really interesting too, they're really smart animals! I like a lot of invertebrates.

I say it's not worth being your favorite animal if it isn't responsible for a few fatalities. That shuts 'em up. Sounds to me like they know exactly one thing about orcas, and just feel the need to continue the conversation.

LOL nice way of looking at it. :D That might just be the case. Oh, how uninformed some people are.

*gasp* But I love orcas! I love most marine life - seals, walruses, manatees, all of them! Foxes are my favourite animal, and I live in an area where I'm surrounded by farms with chickens - it won't stop me (I know foxes are kind of the sneaky slytherins of the animal world - that's kind of why I like them so much, in a perverse way). Mind you, I can see how orcas have more bad publicity where you are, what with all the theme parks and stuff - over here, dangerous dogs actually DO get a lot of publicity. But still, victimising you about what wildlife you like is totally uncalled for - it's like, you can put a lion in a zoo and have petting sessions if you want - it's still a wild animal, not a fluffy housecat. There's a risk with every animal. People don't seem to get that.

Exactly! I also found out that, interestingly enough, no serious injuries or deaths ever occured at the SeaWorld here in California (which I finally got to go to in June). Apparently all the bad attacks happened in Florida. They have a whale there who is responsible for three human deaths.

I went to the one in Florida when I was about 9, 10, I heard that was where the attacks happened. But honestly ... no matter how careful you are, how well you train them, they're freakin' massive wild animals. You take your chance, and you accept that if they lash out it might not be your 'fault', per say, but you have to be prepared to deal with the consequences and not place blame. And while it's horrible when trainers die, I do think they accept that risk.

Some 23-year-old woman was killed just recently by dogs that she rescued from abuse and neglect. She'd devoted her whole life to helping animals, ever since she was a little kid, and look what happened. Stupid dogs. Why can't they see the differene between their tormentors and their rescuers? And why do they usually attack anyone BUT their tormentors? I'm sure it's fear, but still, they know what they themselves are capable of, and they could easily end the abuse by killing their abusers. That would be sweet, sweet justice if they did.

That poor woman! She was just trying to be charitable ... ugh, that's part of the reason I think dogs are so overrated. Animals like cats - you constantly know where you are with them. They pretty much hate everybody - that's fine, nice and predictable, you're always a tiny bit on your guard, as you should be with any animal (out of respect for what they're capable of, not fear or hatred). But dogs? They're constantly painted as loyal and 'man's best friend', yet like you say, they seem to have such little concept of the difference between love and fear, and turn on a dime. People let their guard down, and trouble happens.

I don't mind orcas. My favourite animals tend to be aggressive. No problem with loving orcas. So one killed someone. Plenty of animals kill people. Heck, they have to kill each other in the wild. And people kill animals. Seriously, hasn't anyone else realized that animals kill people and people kill animals?
I should be vegetarian, but that WOULD be unhealthy for me, since I'm already anemic and red meat is supposed to be good for me. Now, just to rub that in, I'm going to go take my iron pill...just kidding. But I really do take pills for my iron intake.

I can't go very long without meat either for the same reason. Iron pills tend to make me sick, but I'm talking a multivitamin now and feeling pretty good. ^_^
