Heard about that. At least no one was hurt, but I think it was an exaggeration to say his birthday was ruined by it. A two-year-old will eat food off the floor, so he's not going to care what's inside his cake.
Only the parents can ruin the party by calling it off over a knife in a cake. Of course there was no excuse for it, but there's also no reason to just put a grinding halt to a 2-year-old's big day either. The parents made it sound like it was such a big deal, that it ruined everything, that guests just walked out on them (obviously not true friends then) and that "he'll never have another second birthday again."
Like anyone remembers anything at that age. I have some VERY vague memories as a 3 or 4 year old, but that's it. And 2-year-olds don't really appreciate anything either. Sure, you can reall make their day with some cake, but again, he's not going to give a crap about a knife in the cake, as long as it doesn't hurt him. Those parents had a right to be angry, yes, but not overdramatic to the point that THEY ruined their kid's birthday and blamed it on others.
