Yeah that's what we call it here... Weird, I thought they called them that everywhere.. Crossing guard does make more sense, but we call them lollipop men, probably because of the sings they carry that look like lollipops.
I've never heard it before you mentioned it, although it might be used in other parts of the country, especially New England, which has more Britishisms than the west coast. I also looked up "crossing guard" on Wikipedia and it says "lollipop man" is most commonly used in the UK an Australia.
"Lollipop man" sounds like some kind of pedophile.
Weird, I seriousy just assumed it was used by everyone everywhere... Yeah, maybe it is. Australia use it too? Well, at least the UK isn't alone I'd probably prefer if they were called Crossing gaurds, I was always disappointed as a child, believing that 'lollipop man' meant they gave you free lollipops whenever you crossed the road.
It does! And there are lots right next to my school... Oh god
There a pedophiles near your school?! Aren't there laws about where registered sex offenders can and can't live? In this country they aren't permitted to live within a certain radius of schools, parks or daycare centers, even if their crimes had nothing to do with children. And these days you can become a registered sex offender for life just for sexting someone.
